Drafting the Declaration of Independence

The United States Declaration of Independence 1776

The Announcement of Independence

Delegates from each of the Thirteen Colonies met in Philadelphia in the summer of 1776 to make up one's mind the case for freedom. The goal was to convince us that the fourth dimension had come up for the United Colonies to declare their independence from Female parent England.

It was an incredibly difficult fourth dimension for the young United States. For more than a year, Great Britain and the Xiii Colonies had been at war over the issue of "taxation without representation." The Colonies believed that their rights were being impeded past the British, who were levying taxes upon them without their consent.

The conflict had rapidly escalated into more than of an issue than just tax, notwithstanding, and many of the Colonies had started to retrieve that they were capable of governing themselves. They were persuaded that Parliament wasn't looking out for their interests, proven by the fact that despite their population the Colonies had not been allowed represent themselves in the British Legislature.

As a result, the 2nd Continental Congress met in Philadelphia in June of 1776. Slightly more than than a month after, the Declaration of Independence was proposed to the States. John Hancock, the offset signatory, was the just person to sign on July 4. Many of the other delegates would identify their names on the completed Document on August 2 of that same year. The last person to sign, the New Hampshire delegate Matthew Thornton, endorsed the document on November 4, 1776.

Originally, the delegates pushed for Richard Henry Lee, writer of the Lee Resolution, to write the Declaration of Independence, not Jefferson. Withal, circumstances changed the course of history. Offset, Lee was appointed to the Committee of Confederation for the writing of the Articles of Confederation, and thought that being part of both committees would be too great an endeavor. Second, his wife became gravely sick during the Philadelphia convention, forcing him to return home prematurely.

A young consul from Virginia who had shown bully promise was selected to accept Lee's identify. His name was Thomas Jefferson, and he would rapidly become 1 of the virtually important individuals in the history of the United States. What nigh people don't know is that, at first, Jefferson had no interest in penning the Declaration. He wanted John Adams to do it instead. Adams writes in his account of the episode in a letter of the alphabet to Timothy Pickering, a pol from Massachusetts and a good friend of Adams:

Jefferson proposed to me to make the draft. I said, 'I will non,' 'You should do it.' 'Oh! no.' 'Why will you not? Yous ought to practice information technology.' 'I will not.' 'Why?' 'Reasons enough.' 'What tin can be your reasons?' 'Reason get-go, you are a Virginian, and a Virginian ought to appear at the head of this business organisation. Reason 2nd, I am obnoxious, suspected, and unpopular. Yous are very much otherwise. Reason 3rd, y'all tin write x times amend than I tin can.' 'Well,' said Jefferson, 'if you lot are decided, I will do besides as I can.' 'Very well. When you lot accept drawn information technology upwards, we will have a coming together.'

So, it was settled. Over the course of seventeen days, in between meetings and other governmental affairs, Jefferson penned the Annunciation of Independence under the advisement of the Committee. It was an human action that secured Jefferson'due south name in history forever.
