YouTube Private Channel
A tutorial on how to create a YouTube private channel, add users as managers, create unlisted playlist and associate a video to the playlist
Creating a YouTube account
To begin, you will need to create a YouTube account for your education course. You will need to do this once.
- Go to YouTube.com and click "SIGN IN" located on the top-right corner
- If you have a Gmail account, click to your Gmail email address. Next, click "Use another account" and follow the instruction on Step 3
- If this is your first time, click "Create Account" and select the account for business
- Click "Create a Gmail account instead" option and fill out the necessary information. You will enter the new username for this account (ex: YCEDU230@gmail.com)
- Click "I Agree" to the Privacy Notice and will automatically go to the YouTube's homepage with your newly created account
Setting YouTube account to private
You will do this one time. Follow the steps to have your YouTube account private.
- In your YouTube account, click on your user photo located on the top-right corner
- Click "Your channel"
- You can change the name of the account and press "CREATE CHANNEL". Your channel is created
- Go to the account again and click the gear button next to Creator Studio.
This will take you to the YouTube settings page - Go to "Advanced settings" and select the "DELETE CHANNEL" button. Don't worry, you will not delete your account. Instead, you will hide the channel
- Enter the Gmail login information again then click "Next"
- Select "I want to hide my channel" and select the check-boxes for confirmation
- Click the "HIDE MY CHANNEL" button and then "HIDE MY CONTENT"
Congrats! You hid your YouTube account.
Creating a private brand channel
To add managers, you need to create a private brand channel. This brand channel will be used to create playlists and add videos to them. You will need to do this once.
- In your YouTube account, click on your user photo located on the top-right corner
- Go to "Settings"
- Click "Create a new channel"
- Provide a name to the new channel (e.g. EDU 340 videos), then click the "Create" button. Awesome! You created your brand channel. Next, you will need to hide the channel
- Click on your user photo and press "Settings"
- Go to "Advanced settings" and select the "DELETE CHANNEL" button.
- Select "I want to hide my content" and select the check-boxes for confirmation
- Click the "HIDE MY CONTENT" button and then "HIDE MY CONTENT"
Your private brand channel has been created. You can begin to add and remove managers including creating unlisted playlists.
Switching to hidden brand channel
When you log into YouTube, you may be either be in your account channel or your brand channel. Here are the steps on how to set your hidden brand channel as default to avoid confusion.
- Log in to YouTube and click on your user photo located on the top-right corner. Make sure you are on the hidden brand channel (e.g. EDU 340 videos)
- If not, click "Switch account" and select the hidden brand channel. You will be switched to the hidden channel immediately
- Click on your user photo again and select "Settings"
- Select "Advanced settings"
- Check the box "Use this channel (name of the hidden channel) when I sign in to my (your Gmail) account" and press "Save"
Adding and managing users
You can add professors as managers to the hidden brand channel. It is best if they log in or create a Google (Gmail) account.
- Go to YouTube and remain in the hidden brand channel
- Click on your user photo located on the top-right corner
- Next, click "Settings"
- Click "Add or remove managers"
- Press the "Manage Permissions" button
- To add managers, click on the Add people icon on the top right. A pop-up will appear
- Enter their email addresses separating with commas and select "Manager" under the "Choose a role" drop-down
- Next, click "Invite" then "Done". Professors will receive an email invitation to the hidden brand channel. If the professor does not have a Gmail account, they will need to create one in order to access the channel
- To remove a user, follow steps 1-5 and click on the "X" button next to the name of the user. Then, select "Done"
Creating an unlisted playlist
- Go to YouTube and remain in the hidden brand channel
- Click on your user photo located on the top-right corner
- Next, select "YouTube Studio (beta)"
- Hover to "Other features" and select "Playlists" [Other feats then playlists]
- Click " + New playlist" button
- Give a title and select "Unlisted" in the Privacy drop-down
- Then click "Create"
You created an unlisted playlist! Let's populated videos to this playlist.
Associating and viewing student videos to an unlisted playlist
Students will submit unlisted video links. Here is how to add and view their student videos to the playlist you've created.
- Click the student video link
- Next, to the Share button, click on the playlist icon ()
- Checkbox to the newly created playlist. On the bottom of the screen, a notification will appear with the sentence "Added to [name of the playlist]"
- To view the videos in your playlist, click your user photo located on the top-right corner
- Next, select "YouTube Studio (beta)"
- Hover to "Other features" and select "Playlists"
- Click the playlist name and the students' videos from the playlist will appear
Downloading student videos from a playlist
To download students' videos from the playlist, you will need to download a software called 4K Download. You will provide the playlist URL link.
- Follow the step by step tutorial on how to download a playlist which includes installing the software
- It is recommended to create folders on your computer or network drive and name them to distinguish semesters. Add the videos to the semester folder
